The season drew to a close with the visit of Rustington. Looking to avenge our 5-2 away victory. But in a typical end of season affair Lancing were the keener side and came through 2-1 winners to complete the double over Rustington.
On a hard bouncy pitch that had to have water brushed away before the start it was always going to be hard to produce fluent, entertaining football.
Martyn "Foxy" Rea taking over in goal again from the injured Luke Green, who suffered concusion at the Cup final the previous day. The Cup Final that also produced some very unwell players that had partied into the N*Ght and early hours of the morning. A few hangovers and suffering dehydration was always going to take its toll.
Lancing went in front after another mazy run from Bozzy, he worked an opening and shot into the net at the near post. A great effort again from a player that has excelled this season. He had to be replaced at half time following a tweak of his groin, the first he has had for a while, the applied ice having little effect on his little erect. The only minutes he has missed of the whole league season, an outstanding record. 1-0 at half time.
Lancing then decided to get Rustington back into the game, a wayward pA*S out of defence by Bambi let the Rustington forwards attack the Lancing goal and a shot curled into the top corner gave the youthful, agile and energetic Foxy no chance.
Rustington then had the upper hand for a while. The sprightly Foxy had to be at his best as he first tipped one round the post diving full length to his left. Then he produced a great stop from point blank range, I think he was still getting up from his previous effort, the follow up shot was put wide, a glaring miss, thank you a bit of luck for the season.
Then a bit of good football between Garnham and Beard saw Beard bursting into the box, his shot was saved but it fell on a plate for The Griff to ram home via the post. Once again Feed the Griff and he will score. Another great season for the experienced striker. The goal celebration was a sight to behold, the moves were fantastic, Tom Jones eat your heart out, the hip swinging was brilliant. I could see Luke Mighall desperate to join in and show the Griff how to do these dance routines properly. As a dance professional perhaps he could get his troupe to practice for the end of season evening on Friday 14th May. Here we go lads, Aint no mountain high enough, aint no valley low enough, aint no river wide enough. Or whatever version Lee wants to sing.
Luke Mighall has had a great season as skipper and capped it all with a MOM perfomance, just a shame he couldn't score with the header in the first half. Great atT*Tude.
Thank you to all the players who have made the season so enjoyable and to all the management team, Foxy, Kevin and Andy your help as usual has been fantastic.
And a special thank you to Peter Towell, you really amaze me how much you do for all the teams. The effort Pete puts in for Lancing Football Club is brilliant, difficult to put into words. He is the best. If there were league tables for helpers he would be the Champion.
Thank you to everyone for your support. Have a good summer and see you for pre season in June.
