Lancing were out to avenge the recent 5-1 rubbing at Southwick. They certainly put in a much more workman like performance. Looking up for the game and keen to make amends.
Starting the game very fast and going end to end it was a typical local derby, tackles flying in, voices raised and no quarter given from either side.
Luke Green pulled off a good save when James Wotherspoon was sent clear, trying to lift the ball over the keeper, Green reacted well and prevented the first goal.
Very soon Lancing took the lead. A good defensive header won by Chris Gander started the move, a ball up to Garnham a neat flick on and Boswell lifted it over the advancing keeper wih a clever classy touch. 1-0 lead.
Southwick came straight back on the attack having been rocked by conceding the lead. It took a good header from the player manager Shepherd to get them level. A ball into the box from the left found Shepherd who headed back across the goal giving Green no chance.
1-1. Not much goal mouth action after this and the first half drew to a close at 1-1 and a very close game looked on.
The second half started with again both sides going end to end and exchanging blow for blow. Garnham was forced off at half time with an ankle injury and a change of formation saw The Griff back upfront in his more familiar position. His presence seemed to unsettle the Southwick back four. Lancing had the ball in the back of the net only for it to be disallowed much to The Griffs dismay. I haven't witnessed such an outbreak of disbelief from the usually placid gentleman. He obviously felt hard done by.
Lancing took the lead again fairly soon after. A long throw from Skipper was met at the near post by Griffin, flicked into the danger area and swept in by Danny Clayton, 2-1.
The game was still very tight and going end to end.
Going into added time it looked like Lancing had got the result but Southwick were determined to get a share of the spoils. Walton raced down the left wing and pulled the ball back where Shepherd slid in and forced it past Green, 2-2. With a minute to go. A point each. On reflection and the way the game went a draw was probably a fair result. Never a great game on a very hard pitch but as previously mentioned a fully committed game from both teams.
Another member of the youth team got his taste of first team football when Kieron Beales was introduced for the last 10 minutes. Showing just how important the youth set up is to the club.
