Rustington came to Culver Road a place above Lancing in the league.
A very good quick paced game. Rustington playing good flowing football knocking the ball around well on the perfect playing surface. With the bit of rain on top the passing was slick from both sides.
Lancing had the first opportunity following a free kick from Chris Hibberd that found the head of Lee Garnham, the chance headed wide. Much to the dismay of the Lancing bench, with Garnham in a rich vein of scoring the net bulging was expected.
They took the lead soon later when another good free kick was delivered into the area and following a bit of a scramble Tom Pickford showed some class and great finsihing for a centre half as he rifled the ball high into the Rustington net. As an ex Rustington player he must have enjoyed the moment.
Although Rustington had a lot of the ball the Lancing keeper was never really tested. Apoart from a couple of hesitant kicked clearances the defence were looking solid again. Half time 1-0.
The second half was fairly much the same. Rustington playing neat football without looking dangerous and Lancing playing with a bit more tempo and quality.
The second goal soon came with good build up play a great run and cross by Darren Annis passing the ball on to the foot of Shaz Sadough to finish off inside the six yard box. 2-0.
Once the second goal went in the game was virtually over. Such was the dominance of the Lancing defence.
Wayne Joseph went close firing over the top and also forcing a good save from McCarthy in the Rustington goal. Dan Turner firing just wide when well placed at the far post. Lancing could and possibly should have added to the two goals but a 2-0 win was enough.
Another clean sheet, four in a row, must have been most encouraging to the Lancing Management team. Taking the side up above Rustington and into second place in the league. A great start to the campaign and something to build on.
